What Is Title Case?

Title case capitalises the first letter of every major word in a phrase while leaving short function words in lowercase. Nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs get capital letters. Articles like the and a, coordinating conjunctions like and and but, and short prepositions like in, of, and at stay lowercase — unless they appear as the first or last word in the title.

The result is the standard capitalisation style used across English-language publishing: The Great Gatsby, How to Win Friends and Influence People, A Guide to Writing Better Headlines. It signals that a phrase is a title or heading rather than ordinary prose, and it applies the same logic consistently so you never have to decide word by word.

When to Use Title Case

Blog post and article titles nearly always use title case — it is the default in most editorial style guides and CMS platforms. Email subject lines written in title case tend to stand out in crowded inboxes because they read as deliberate rather than casual. Report and document headings use it to mark section breaks clearly and give the document a professional finish.

YouTube and video titles, LinkedIn headlines, and product names all benefit from consistent title case — it projects care and authority, and ensures that every word is treated the same way across every piece of content you publish.

Your text never leaves your browser. No server, no tracking, no account required.

Which words get capitalised in title case?

Major words — nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns — are capitalised. Short function words stay lowercase: articles (a, an, the), coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, nor), and short prepositions (in, of, at, on, for). The first and last words of the title are always capitalised regardless of their type.

Is title case the same as sentence case?

No. Sentence case capitalises only the first word of the sentence and any proper nouns — everything else stays lowercase. Title case capitalises all major words throughout the phrase. Both are available in the same tool so you can switch between them and compare instantly.

Can I convert headings in bulk?

Yes. Paste as many lines or headings as you need — there is no character limit. Each line is converted independently, so an entire list of article titles or section headings can be formatted in one pass.
