How It Works

ClearConvert extracts the text content from your PDF using pdf.js — a JavaScript library that runs entirely on your device. The extracted text is then placed into a standard .docx file, one paragraph per line, using the docx library, also running locally. The Word file is generated and downloaded without any data leaving your browser.

The process preserves the text content of your PDF, but not its paragraph structure: each line of the PDF becomes its own paragraph in Word. Pages are separated by one empty paragraph, not by a page break.

What Gets Converted

The converter extracts all text content from the PDF, one paragraph per line. Headings and body copy are captured as plain text. Because PDF is not a structured document format in the way Word is, some elements are simplified in the output:

Preserved: text content, reading order (for single-column pages), line breaks. Page separation is only a blank line.

Does it work with scanned PDFs?

Scanned PDFs contain images of text rather than actual text characters. ClearConvert works with text-layer PDFs — documents that were created digitally, such as those exported from Word, generated by software, or produced by modern printers with OCR. If your PDF was created by scanning a paper document, you will need to run OCR on it first to add a text layer. Scanned PDFs without a text layer cannot be converted: ClearConvert shows a “No text found” message instead of producing a file.

What is the output file format?

The output is a standard .docx file compatible with Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice, and all other modern word processors. You can open, edit, and save it like any other Word document.
