The extracted text is then structured into paragraphs and packaged into a standard .docx file using the docx library, also running locally. The process preserves the text content and paragraph structure of your PDF. Each page break in the original document becomes a section separator in the Word output, making it easy to navigate long documents after conversion.

What Gets Converted

The converter extracts all text content from the PDF and organises it into paragraphs. Plain text, headings, and body copy are all captured. Because PDF is not a structured document format in the way Word is, some elements are simplified in the output:

Preserved: text content, paragraph structure, reading order, line breaks, page separation.

Not preserved: fonts, colours, images, tables, columns, headers and footers, text boxes. The output is clean, editable text — ideal for extracting content you want to revise or repurpose.

Does it work with scanned PDFs?

Scanned PDFs contain images of text rather than actual text characters. ClearConvert works with text-layer PDFs — documents that were created digitally, such as those exported from Word, generated by software, or produced by modern printers with OCR. If your PDF was created by scanning a paper document, you will need to run OCR on it first to add a text layer.

What is the output file format?
