Etsy Character Limit: Why Etsy Just Told Sellers to Stop Maxing Out Titles

The 140-character title limit hasn't changed. What Etsy just changed is the advice about how to fill it — years of "use every character" guidance was quietly reversed in the company's own Seller Handbook.

FieldLimit
Listing title140 characters
Tags13 tags × 20 characters each
DescriptionUp to 10,000+ characters
Shop name4-20 characters
Title (visible on mobile before truncation)~40 characters

Etsy's title limit is 140 characters, confirmed directly by Etsy's own Help documentation and unchanged for years. What did just change, in an official Seller Handbook update, is the advice about what to do with that space — the long-standing guidance to fill every available character with keywords has been explicitly walked back.

The Old Advice, and Why Etsy Is Backing Off It

For years, standard Etsy SEO advice treated the title as the single most important ranking field, encouraging sellers to use most or all of the 140 characters to cram in as many keyword variations as possible. Etsy's own updated guidance now states that search has evolved to take a more holistic view — considering title, tags, attributes, descriptions, the first photo, and even reviews together — which means the title no longer needs to carry the full weight of a listing's discoverability by itself.

What This Means in Practice

Etsy's new official recommendation is to focus a title on clarity and relevance — clearly stating what the item is, then including its most important traits like color, material, and size — while moving supporting keyword variations into tags, attributes, and the description instead. This is a genuine shift in emphasis: a title stuffed with every synonym a shopper might search for is no longer the target Etsy is optimizing sellers toward; a title a human can read naturally is.

A title crammed with keyword variations was never actually for the shopper — it was written for the algorithm's older behavior. Etsy's own update is effectively confirming that writing for a human first, and letting tags and attributes carry the long-tail keyword variations, produces the same discoverability without sacrificing the part of the listing an actual buyer reads before deciding to click.

The First 40 Characters Still Matter

One piece of the old advice remains genuinely true regardless of the title-stuffing reversal: only the first roughly 40 characters of a title display on mobile search results, where the large majority of Etsy's traffic originates. Whatever a title leads with — the core keyword phrase identifying the item — still needs to sit inside that visible window, since a strong keyword buried at character 90 does nothing for a shopper who never scrolls or expands the title to see it.

Tags: Where the Long-Tail Keywords Belong Now

Etsy gives 13 tag slots, each holding up to 20 characters, confirmed directly by Etsy's own Help Center — multi-word phrases count as a single tag, so "cozy coffee mug" uses one of the 13 slots rather than three. With titles now expected to stay natural and readable, tags become the more appropriate home for keyword variations and long-tail phrases that wouldn't read well inside a title — repeating a word already in the title wastes a tag slot Etsy has already indexed from elsewhere in the listing.

Checking a Draft Against Both Numbers

Since the title now needs to work as natural, readable text within 140 characters (and specifically within the first 40 for mobile), while tags carry the keyword variation work separately, checking a draft against both constraints — not just confirming it fits under a single character count — matches how Etsy's own current guidance frames the two fields. A character counter makes checking either limit fast, worth doing separately for the title and for each individual tag given the 20-character-per-tag ceiling.

Etsy's 140-character title limit hasn't moved, but the advice about what to do with it has — the company's own updated guidance now favors a natural, readable title over one engineered to hold as many keywords as physically possible. That shifts the keyword-stuffing work toward tags and attributes instead, which is exactly where Etsy's current search system says that work now belongs.
